Steps for using lawn mower blade:
1. Disconnect the ignition wire from the spark plug. (If it is a cordless mower, remove the battery pack)
2. Turn the mower on its side to expose the retaining nut or bolt that secures the blade to the bottom of the mower
3. After removing the retaining nut or bolt, pull off the mower blade, noting which side of the blade is facing down. It is important to retighten the blade in the same direction.
4. After removing the blades, take a minute to scrape the bottom surface of the mower blade with a narrow-bladed putty knife. Remove all clumps of grass, dirt, leaves and other debris. Also, clean both sides of the mower blade by spraying it with penetrating oil and then brushing it with a stiff bristle brush.
Mower blades usually have a cutting edge at each end, located on opposite sides of the blade. Each cutting edge is only about 3 or 4 inches long; it does not extend the length of the blade. Clamp the blade in a vise at an angle with one of the cutting edges facing up.
6. Place the sharpening stone in the drill. Put on some safety glasses. Pull the trigger to run the drill at full speed. Slide the rotary sharpener over the edge of the blade. Make sure the blunt cutting edge is facing the bevel of the stone and that the flat surface of the guide is against the back of the blade. Slowly move the stone back and forth along the cutting edge with moderate pressure. After moving back and forth four to five times, stop and check the sharpness of the blade
