Initially following the previous Hawker Hurricane design, the Typhoon was updated to go over 400 mph and carry heavier armaments to be flown at higher altitudes as a fighter bomber, but because of the drag of the heavier wing, its original purpose was dropped because of design errors resulting in many crashes. The speeds weren't competitive with the enemy, continually running into issues at the higher altitude, it was considered inferior to the the popular Spitfire. Modifications to the aircraft and the change in lower altitude missions; the Hurricane began to find its role. Fitted with rocket projectiles and bombs as their heavy wings could sustain, the "Bombphoon" became an exceptional weapon in ground attacks against the enemy, assisting troops in the Normandy landings and knocking out hundreds of heavy tanks during Operation Goodwood. The numbers of destroyed tanks have been historically debated, what isn't debated, is its tremendous effort in World War II in assisting victory to the Allies.
