The PanaVise 385 micrometer head is a specialized work-holding accessory designed to securely and safely hold micrometers. It is 3-1/8" (79.8 mm) tall and weighs 0.23 lb. (0.1 kg). The head has a 5/8" (15.9 mm) shaft which is compatible with any PanaVise 300 series base. The upper end of the head has a side twist jaw lined with two thermoplastic Delrin pads. The jaws of the 385 micrometer head open from 0 - 1/2" (12.7 mm) with the high stiffness and low friction of the Delrin pads aiding in the accuracy of readings. The 385 micrometer head has a 15/16" (24.1 mm) throat depth. This allows the head to effectively clamp the frame of an inserted micrometer into place, freeing one of the user's hands to hold the edge of the item being measured, while the other turns the micrometer's dials. The 385 micrometer head can also be used to hold circuit boards and other small items.
Micrometers are handheld devices used to make small, precise measurements of parts used in machining, manufacturing and other trades. The common outside micrometer utilizes a calibrated screw set to the exact width desired and has an exagerated "U" shape that terminates in a flat frame. This distinctive shape allows the entire outer surface of parts to be measured by passing them through the device. Micrometers are sensitive devices whose accuracy can be compromised by constantly putting the device down and picking it back up again. Mounting a micrometer along its frame eliminates this possibility, and frees up both hands for manipulation of the parts through the measured opening.
