Kastehelmi - which is Finnish for "dewdrop" - evolved from a technical challenge when Toikka started using glass droplets to cover joint marks left on the surface of pressed glass pieces. The result was a popular range of glassware decorated with beads of glass that glisten like dewdrops in the morning sun. Professor Oiva Toikka is one of the most renowned names in Finnish glass art. His style deviates from the streamlined aesthetic of Scandinavian design in imaginative, rich and bold ways, earning him international praise. He has won some of the most prestigious design awards in the world, including the Lunning Prize, Pro Finlandia Medal, World Glass Now 85 Award, Kaj Franck Design Prize and the Prince Eugen Medal.
