St. Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland, Nigeria, Engineers, Legal Assistants, Invoked Against Snakes, Sins and Witchcraft. Equally fascinating is that of the "well of St. Patrick", which for centuries has become part of the collective imagination as a metaphor of infinite wealth. According to a medieval legend, the well was a very deep cave, located on an islet in the Loughderg, in north-western Ireland. Here the patron used to retire in prayer. It is said that Christ had indicated that very cave to him to win the unbelief of the faithful, who are not at all convinced about the pains of the afterlife. Anyone who managed to reach the bottom, overcoming endless trials, would have obtained the remission of sins, access to a place of delight and, finally, Paradise. The cave is still the destination of many pilgrimages, despite being closed to the public in 1457 by order of Pope Alexander VI.
