WHAT IS STERLING SILVER?
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% of silver and 7.5% of other metals by weight. The sterling alloy originated in Europe and was being used for commerce as early as the 12th century in the area that is now northern Germany.
BUT WHY 925?
Fine silver, for example 99.9% pure silver, is relatively soft, due to this softness, silver on its own is not that great when it comes to durability and sturdiness. Therefore, to make those beautiful silver rings, silver earrings, etc., pure silver is often mixed with other metals ususally copper, zinc, or platinum to create sterling silver.
