Description

Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as the Sorrowful Mother, refers to the depiction of the Virgin Mary in Christian art and devotional practices, emphasizing the sorrows or sufferings she experienced during her life, particularly during the Passion of her son, Jesus Christ. The devotion is rooted in the Bible and tradition, focusing on seven specific sorrows or dolors that Mary endured: The Prophecy of Simeon: As recounted in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2:34–35), when Mary and Joseph presented the infant Jesus in the temple, the holy man Simeon prophesied that a sword would pierce Mary's heart, signifying the future sorrow she would experience. The Flight into Egypt: In order to escape King Herod's massacre of infants, Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus fled to Egypt. This event reflects the anguish and uncertainty of their journey (Matthew 2:13–15). The Loss of Jesus in the Temple: When Jesus was 12 years old, Mary and Joseph lost him during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. This episode, found in Luke 2:41–50, represents the distress of losing a child and the anxiety of not knowing his whereabouts. Meeting Jesus on the Way to Calvary: As Jesus carried the cross to Calvary, Mary encountered her son in his suffering. This meeting is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible but is part of Christian tradition and devotion. The Crucifixion: Perhaps the most profound sorrow, Mary stood at the foot of the cross as her son was crucified (John 19:25–27). This dolor captures the immense grief of witnessing the death of one's child. Taking Down the Body of Jesus from the Cross: After Jesus died, his lifeless body was taken down from the cross and placed in the arms of his mother, symbolizing her deep sorrow and grief. The Burial of Jesus: The sorrow of laying Jesus' body in the tomb, preparing for his burial (Matthew 27:59–60). Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows encourages reflection on Mary's role in the redemptive suffering of Christ. Various prayers, devotions, and artistic representa
