Photochromic shields will turn dark in sunlight and become clear(or almost entirely clear) again when indoors. This is the result of chemical responses to the presence (and absence) of ultraviolet light.
Photochromic shields are known to darken more quickly than they lighten and the speed it takes is slightly temperature dependent too. If it's a really bright and sunny day, they'll typically reach max darkness in about 20s. Full activation will be in 2 minutes.
