An ancient sky god named Horus was thought to have the sun and moon for eyes. Though Thoth was associated with the moon, he quickly came to be closely associated with the sun (and the sun deity Ra as Ra-Horakhty ("Ra, who is Horus of the two horizons")). An old narrative recalls a fight between Horus and Set in which Set lost his testicles and Horus' right eye was plucked out!
The term "Wadjet" (which means "whole" or "healthy") was given to Horus' eye when Thoth magically healed it. The tale refers to the waxing and waning of the moon, when the moon appears to have been torn out of the sky before being restored once per lunar month. It is particularly mentioned in this myth that Horus' left eye has been torn out.
