Description

When the spring rains come, at the second lunar month, H'mong women start sowing flax seeds. More than two months later they can harvest. After being cut, the flax plant will be dried, stripped of its bark and then put into a mortar and pestle to remove the film on the bark, making the flax fiber soft and clean. Next is the yarn splicing step. This is a time-consuming process and requires persistence, dexterity, and precise techniques. If you go to the high mountains areas of Vietnam such as Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Lai Chau... it is not difficult to see the H'Mong women on their way to the market or to work, they yarn splicing while walking. After joining, the flax rolls are soaked with kitchen ash to make the fibers whiter, dried before weaving begins. The fabric is woven entirely by hand. When they finished weaving the cloth, they continued to roll stones to make the cloth softer and shinier. From white linen, H'mong women make traditional costumes with many delicate and elaborate patterns. Then the final step is cutting and sewing to complete the products.
