This Palmetto style 1555 graphite filament compression packing with a graphite coating and a solid lubricant protects rotating and reciprocating shafts, valves, and agitators from fluid leaks in severe service and high-speed applications. The interwoven braided packing seal is made of a 99-percent assay graphite filament impregnated with fine graphite particles. Graphite resists high temperatures and pressures, exhibits a low coefficient of friction, and transfers heat away from the shaft to prevent glazing and scoring, reducing leakage and extending the packing and sleeve life. The graphite coating further reduces frictional heat to allow for higher shaft speeds and higher temperatures. The packing seal contains a solid lubricant that provides a bearing film between the shaft and seal to prevent any wicking or fraying.
This packing seal is compatible with media in the pH range of 1-14, except for strong oxidizers in the 1-2 pH range, such as oleum, fluorine, and fuming nitric acid. It has a maximum pressure limit of 3,500 pounds per square inch (psi), a pressure-velocity (PV) factor of 800,000, and a shaft speed of 4,000 feet per minute (fpm). It operates to a maximum temperature of 1,200 degrees F (650 degrees C) in steam, 800 degrees F (427 degrees C) in oxidizing atmospheres, and 6,000 degrees F (3,300 degrees C) in non-oxidizing atmospheres. Style 1555 is suitable for use in rotating and reciprocating equipment such as digesters, boiler feed pumps, and chemical pumps.
Specifications Maximum temperature in non-oxidizing atmospheres 6,000 degrees F (3,300 degrees C) Maximum temperature in oxidizing atmospheres 800 degrees F (427 degrees C) Maximum temperature in steam 1,200 degrees F (650 degrees C) pH range 1-14, except strong oxidizers in the 1-2 pH range Pressure limit 3,500 psi (241 bar) PV factor 800,000 Shaft speed 4,000 fpm (20.3 m/s)
Rope seals provide a pressure seal to help retain fluids and gases in a wide variety of commercial and industrial applications. They have a round, square, or rectangular cross section, and come in various braided designs including braid-over-braid, braid-over-core, laminated, twisted, or interwoven. Rope seals can be manufactured from a single material or a combination of materials that suit specific pressure, temperature, speed, and chemical applications. Some rope seals are impregnated with lubricant and have reinforced cores for improved performance in specific environments, such as extremely high temperatures. They can be used to create a static seal in fixed or slow-moving applications like expansion joints, doors, and valves, or a dynamic seal in equipment with reciprocating, rotating, or oscillating movement like centrifugal pumps, rotating stems, and blowers. Rope seals come in uncut lengths on spools or as precut molded rings. They are used in numerous industries including agriculture, oil and gas, automotive, aerospace, construction, and consumer goods.
Palmetto Inc. manufactures packing products for pumps and valves, such as compression packing seals, packing tools, gasket sheets, and fillers. The company, founded in 1872, is headquartered in Denton, MD.
