The VL6180 is a time-of-flight measurement sensor. The sensor consists of a very small laser source and a matching sensor. The VL6180X can detect "time of flight," or the time it takes for the laser to recover the sensor to calculate the distance.
Unlike most range sensors, which rely on the intensity of reflected light or the Angle of reflection to determine distance, the VL6180 uses an accurate clock to measure the time it takes for light to bounce off a surface, because it uses a very narrow light source, unlike sonar in ultrasonic waves, and unlike traditional infrared range sensors, which have no linearity problems or "double imaging." You can't tell how close an object is. So the VL6180X is more accurate.
