Stromatolites are fossilized layered deposits of algae within ancient sedimentary rock. These old single-celled organisms are believed to be some of the first forms of life on this planet. Some cyanobacteria (algae) in the rock dates back over 3.5 billion years. Stromatolites range in a variety of colors and can contain many impurities within the bedrock (which is usually limestone). The most common colors we've encountered are brown, beige, reddish-brown, yellow, white, and grey. Stromatolite awakens us to the beauty of life, helping us to cherish and protect its diversity. It encourages us think beyond ourselves, and think instead of the generations that will come after us and the world we want them to inherit.
