Pull the cotton rope part out of the metal tube housing and strike the attached flint wheel so that the cotton rope generates sparks, igniting cigarettes and flammable items, but no flame. It is extinguished by retracting the string back into the tube and then through the attached lid.
Blacken the end of the rope before using it to create a spark. If you want a more visible flame, add a little kerosene to the string.
