Daubigny's Garden
When talking about Van Gogh's gorgeous artistic days, it's always about the vibrant painting - originally titled Green Wheat Fields, Auvers. Humming with the countryside of Northern France, Van Gogh presented this masterpiece in 1890, as if pouring his soul into it. Well, yes, you guessed it, the painting is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
Van Gogh was in the last months of his life at the time, and he intertwined the tip of his brush with memories and moods to sketch this uniquely moody work. In his letter, he confided that his trip to the north was like a return to his homeland, and that his mind found peace in the silence. The hot southern colours gradually receded, to be replaced by calm greens and blues, and the soft tones warmed his heart.
This painting is truly unique, unlike the usual countryside scenes where there is no clear theme, no farmers or carriages, and even the countryside huts are hidden from view. On the contrary, the pure vegetation on the screen dances with the wind, as if it were a carnival of nature. Two-thirds of the picture is flooded with full-bodied greens and blues, punctuated by flowers that look like golden lights. Like his previous paintings in Arles and Saint-Rémy, this work shows a pure and unadulterated natural landscape.
In The Green Wheat Fields of Auvers, Van Gogh poured out his energy, his brush strokes vividly outlining the stems of wheat swaying in the breeze as if they were the earth's own breath. These stems are strong and vital, intricately interwoven as if weaving a picture of nature, with fields, paths and the sky meeting on the right side of the picture. On this large piece of land, the wheat field dances with the wind, and the clouds overhead seem to be dancing as well.
