The devotion to Our Lady, Untier of Knots (also known as Mary, Undoer of Knots) has its roots in a German baroque painting from the 1700s. The painting, titled "Maria Knotenlöserin," was created by an unknown artist and depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary untangling a complex knot. Origin of the Painting: The story goes that a German nobleman named Wolfgang Langenmantel sought the help of a Jesuit priest to mediate in his troubled marriage. The priest, Father Jakob Rem, brought a print of the painting to the Langenmantel home and prayed for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As he prayed, the knots in the Langenmantel marriage were said to have miraculously loosened and were eventually completely undone. Spread of the Devotion: The devotion to Our Lady, Untier of Knots, remained relatively localized for many years. However, it gained broader recognition and popularity in more recent times. Pope Francis, before becoming pope, encountered this devotion in Germany during his studies. Struck by its symbolism and significance, he brought a copy of the painting back to Argentina. After becoming Pope, he introduced the devotion to a broader audience, emphasizing Mary's role in helping to untangle the complexities and difficulties in people's lives. Theological Significance: The devotion to Our Lady, Untier of Knots, is deeply rooted in the understanding of Mary as an advocate and intercessor. Catholics believe that Mary, as the Mother of Jesus, has a special role in bringing their prayers and concerns to her son. The knots in the painting are symbolic of the problems and challenges that individuals and families face in life—whether they be personal, relational, or spiritual. By entrusting these "knots" to Mary, believers seek her intercession to help unravel and resolve the difficulties they encounter. Feast Day: While the devotion to Our Lady, Untier of Knots, does not have a universal feast day in the liturgical calendar, there are local celebrations and devotions associated with this title in various places. Some communities may have special prayers or novenas dedicated to Our Lady, Untier of Knots, on certain occasions. The devotion continues to inspire and offer solace to those facing challenges and seeking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in their lives.
