1989 Topps Baseball is one of the more comprehensive flagship sets. The 792-card checklist includes large team rosters, several subsets and a couple of new additions. Card fronts have a white border that is complimented by a thin inner frame that is based on team colors. The top left corner of the frame is rounded. The player's team name is in a large stylized font at the bottom of the card. A wavy ribbon comes out of the team and holds the player's name in block letters. Card backs have a pinkish background. Players have complete stats for both the major and minor league careers. Short write-ups appear when there is space. The new Monthly Scoreboard on the back tracks month-by-month stats in several key areas. 1989 Topps Baseball marks the first time the previous year's draft picks were included in the base set. Other subsets include Future Stars, Record Breakers, All-Stars and Turn Back the Clock. Every franchise has a Team Leaders card. Manager cards have a team checklist on the back. Key rookie cards in 1989 Topps Baseball include Randy Johnson and Gary Sheffield. Several pack-specific insert sets add a chase element to the set. Rack packs have 22 different Glossy All-Stars. A similar Glossy Rookies set can be found in 100-card cello packs. Exclusive to K-Mart blister packs are 22 Batting Leaders cards. These red-bordered cards are the toughest to find and carry the strongest values.
