SEALING FUNCTION: Pipe plugs fitting is a mechanical fasteners, the role is sealing. NPT sizes are difficult because the thread diameters vary along the thread length for a given pipe size. These plugs are nicely designed, with the maximum thread diameter just under the standard. This is perfect, given that a plug must be able to be screwed in to an unspecified (desired) depth.
