The Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Knights of Malta, are a Catholic military order that was founded in Jerusalem around 1023 to provide care for poor and sick pilgrims. They later became a military order for the protection of these travelers. The knights played a crucial role during the Crusades, gaining a reputation for their fierce fighting skills and bravery. They were recognized for a characteristic eight-pointed cross and their members took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Today, the order takes the form of a charitable and diplomatic organization, known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
