Temperance Tarot Card Tapestry

Patience and parity in Temperance limn the unification of dualities within oneself and within life, creating a harmonious balance. An androgynous angel acts as both a statue and a fountain. It stands fixed and immovable, yet water circulates through it. This symbolizes the importance of staying grounded, but allowing ourselves to go with the flow of life. The hermaphroditic gender of the figure further represents the dichotomy of human nature and the importance of reaching inner equilibrium. It is the metaphorical merger of spirit and matter. Though made from stone, the sculpture embodies spiritual presence, depicted through the tears it sheds. The angel holds two goblets in its hands. The offset positions of the cups parallel the superconscious and subconscious minds. The stream of water between them is a symbol of union and balance between these two forms of consciousness. As there is a give and take in the motion of the water, the same dynamic must exist in our relationship to the physical and metaphysical realms. A cemetery lies on the right of the crying angel. The abundance of headstones and weathered engravings alludes to a decrepit burial ground. A bundle of lilies embellishes the frontmost gravestone as they, as well as the grave they are placed upon, are another sign of a converging chasm. These flowers signify fertility and health, while the headstones hold a direct correlation with death. On the left, a winding passageway leads to a mausoleum with a roof in the shape of a crown. This represents the journey through life towards reaching a higher path of understanding and staying true to our self, purpose, and meaning.
