Leopardite is a variety of quartz porphyry containing small phenocrysts of quartz in a microgranitic groundmass of quartz, orthoclase, albite, and mica. The rock has a characteristically spotted or streaked appearance due to staining by hydroxides of iron and manganese. Jasper is usually considered as Chalcedony; sometimes, however, scientists put it in a group by itself within the quartz group because of its grainy structure. The name jasper is derived from the Greek and means "spotted stone".
Jasper is one of the forms of chalcedony, which is opaque and impure variant of silica mineral. Leopard Jasper is reddish tape in appearance and it is redolent of a leopard skin. Hence, sometimes it is known as leopard skin jasper. The alternate name of Leopard skin jasper is Jaguar Jasper, as it represents the appearance similar to the animal family.
