The ancient Jewish tradition of lighting candles ner neshama in memory of our dearly departed loved ones such as for a Yahrzeit in memory of a parent, spouse, sibling, or family member is deeply rooted in our culture and heritage. The Yahrzeit candles are also lit commemorating the souls of our loved ones at sunset the evening before each anniversary of their passing. It is also customary to light these candles at sunset preceding the last day of Passover, Shavuos, Sukkot and for Yom Kippur. Many light these candles in honor of the Hillula or Yorzeit of famous Tzadikim such as the Holy Baal Shem Tov, the Baba Sali, Rachel Imenu and Rav Shimon Bar Yochai. In observant Jewish communities it is the norm for adults to light only with Oil and olive oil in particular for shabbat and yom kippur . Olive oil was pressed for a variety of uses in the Holy Temple, the first and the purest press was for the Menorah, the secondary and furthermore was oil to be used with some of the sacrifices and anointing the Kohanim.
