The name 'selenite' is mostly synonymous with gypsum.
Gypsum has the same chemical composition as the mineral Anhydrite, but contains water in its structure whereas Anhydrite does not. Many Anhydrite specimens absorb water, transforming into the more common Gypsum. Some Gypsum specimens show evidence of this, containing growths of crumpling layers that testify to their expansion from the addition of water.
All varieties of gypsum, including selenite, are composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate (meaning has two molecules of water), with the chemical formula CaSO4·2H2O. Selenite contains no significant selenium; the similarity of names comes from both substances being named from the Ancient Greek word for the Moon.
