The tool is designed to be struck with a hammer to punch a hole in many fabric materials to make fitting lift the dot socket and washer a simple task
A little tip I use
Most people use a block of wood under the canvas when using similar tools.
That can work fine, but also grab a magazine, something similar to a TV times and place it between the block of wood and the canvas then give the hammer a go.
