The Aztec Calendar, also known as "SunStone", is a disc-shaped monolith, whose size is related to the arrangement of time, movement of the stars and cycles of months, conceived by the Mexica culture.
The Stone of the Sun, discovered on December 17, 1790, is a block of olivine basalt that measures 3.60 meters diameter, thickness of 122 centimeters a total weight is around 24 tons.
The monolith is arranged with a succession of concentric rings that have elements related to time, for example, it describes the duration of the months, the number of days that a year contained and the duration of the Mexican centuries.
The stone disc there are also stripes and points arranged outwards that denote four directions and movements of the sun.
The center of the monolith is carved the face of Tonatiuh, known to the Aztecs as the fifth solar god (his name means tona: make sun, tiuh: go) and who was the leader of heaven.
Experts in the field, both foreigners and Mexicans, affirm that this is much more exact than the Julian Calendar, the immediate antecedent of the current Gregorian Calendar, which also does not reach the degree of precision that the ancient Mexicans managed to print on the Stone of the Sun.
