What are true planar drivers?
True planar drivers have a distinctive feature that their voice coils do not have the same winding wire as traditional dynamic driver drivers. Instead, the voice coil in a planar driver is made by electroplating a conductive metal such as silver onto the diaphragm at a thickness of about 5U in a uniform manner according to the magnetic path structure. This design significantly reduces the weight of the voice coil compared to the thick winding wire in a dynamic driver driver. This allows the diaphragm to vibrate with less weight constraint, thereby improving the extension of high and ultra-high frequencies.
Please keep your eyes open! The so-called "planar magnetic driver" or "planar driver" is nothing more than a dynamic driver that lowers the coil height, and it is worlds apart from a true planar driver. In the past one or two years, some brands have introduced so-called "planar magnetic drivers" or "planar drivers" as a way to capitalize on the popularity of true planar drivers and have created a gimmicky product to fool consumers. In reality, these drivers are simply dynamic drivers with a lower coil height, and they produce sound using 2-4 magnets and a coil. They have low sensitivity and poor high-frequency performance, and their energy conversion efficiency is inferior to true dynamic drivers. These products are only suitable for marketing to naive consumers with slogans like "anime" or "manga." A true planar driver consists of at least 14 high-performance magnets and does not have a coil like a dynamic driver, so it has excellent high-frequency extension and a wide sound field. The difference between a "planar magnetic driver" and a true planar driver is like night and day, and there is a huge gap between them and true HiFi.
